Rubber Technologist
Division (Weir Minerals - APAC)
Location: Batu Caves
Onsite

Purpose of Role:


To lead research and development activities that will result in new and improved products and processes. To provide technical solutions regarding latex and rubber processing and applications to both internal and external customers.

Key Responsibilities:


SHE
To support the implementation of the Company SHE Policy for the prevention of injury, damage or loss to Company personnel and resources and ensure that line management are fully aware of their accountability for the environment, health and safety of Company Employees and others who may be affected by Company activities.
Employees within their area of control are made aware of the SHE Policy, and the responsibilities contained therein, as well as all relevant health, safety and environment standards and systems of work relevant to their trade and work places.
Ensure the Company systems are used in relation to controlling key HSE risks.
All employees and visitors under their control adhere to these standards and systems of work.
As defined in the incident reporting system, ensure incidents are reported, investigated and remedial actions taken. This should include collation and closure of near miss / hazards.
Ensure that relevant information is collated and analysed appropriately to allow for smooth reporting of HSE performance and KPIs in accordance with policy.
Any equipment, plant and substances used within their area of responsibility are suitably constructed and maintained (including certification and inspection reports), and that staffs are trained in the proper use.
SHE matters are communicated to team members on a regular basis and items causing concern are brought to the attention of the appropriate Line Manager.
Be instrumental in driving behavioural and cultural change within their operating area.
All contractors providing services within their area of responsibility are provided with adequate information regarding any activities, or plant and equipment operated which may affect health, safety and environment.
Ensure that method statements for activities have been provided and assessed prior to the initiation of the work.
Ensure that all employees / operatives / contractors and visitors receive appropriate induction training including health, safety and environment.
Ensure that risk assessments are completed and complied with for all facility activities.
Complete incident investigations and routine health and safety site inspections of activities in accordance with company standards.
Set a personal example in health and safety awareness by wearing all personal protective equipment supplied. Ensure that all safety equipment provided to persons under their control is worn and not misused.
Include health, safety and environment as a top level agenda item at regular facility meetings.
Support company HSE policy to help deliver cultural development and sustained continual improvement in performance.

Job Function
Design of formulation for the development of new products
Improve existing products based on customer needs
Develop new suppliers
Evaluate and approve new chemicals / rubber
Support Design and Development activities in ref to ISO 9001 documentation
Provide Technical Support to Manufacturing and Supplier to ensure quality products
Support Weir SHE activities
Support Team Centre Requirements

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

Graduate in chemistry/polymer science/physics
5-8years of industrial research experience
Strong track record of achievement in the development rubber and latex industry and technology.
Hands on practical laboratory skills.
Good problem solving and analytical thinking skills.
Experience of team and project management.
Ability to find critical information from whatever source to understand new technologies, solve problems and to move projects forward.
Independent and resourceful
Experience in ISO 9001 standards particularly in Design and Development Control
Knowledge of compliance to OHSAS18001
Knowledge of compliance to ISO 14001
Excellent interpersonal skills
Team player (subordinates/peers)
Experience in manufacturing systems - Kaizen / lean manufacturing / 5 S

Assignment and planning of work

Objectives and work will be set and agreed with the HOD of T&PD
Support tasks may be requested directly by HOD
Job holder must work in a disciplined and organised manner

Working relationships

Internally with Technical Manager , Laboratory Manager & Head of Department and Team members
Internally with people in management, peers and subordinates in manufacturing, finance, commercial and supply chain.
Externally with Suppliers/ Contract Manufacturers, Testing Laboratories, Consultants. Equipment suppliers and other Technical professional

Problems/key features

The role is multifaceted and requires someone with the necessary technical background , coupled with strong organisation and administrative skills
Departmental work must be in accordance with Weir IP
The job holder is expected to display a high level of initiative and a strong focus on the completion of projects on time
As the project progress from the Laboratory stage to production , the job holder is expected to manage expectations
