You will be reporting to the Technical Manager, based in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. To lead a small team of formulators. Using appropriate technical judgment, devises work plans to improve and develop products. Provide technical support to a range of internal functions. .
Main Responsibilities
Manage a small team of Chemists & Technicians. Explain the purpose behind tasks to the team.
Apply knowledge and experience to creatively propose technical approaches that deliver project results which meet end-user needs and deliver value to the business.
Work within a cross-functional team to deliver project results - manages and takes responsibility for the forward momentum and successful completion of concurrent projects.
Identify potential issues, risks and obstacles and prepare contingency plans.
Have a broad knowledge of current formulating practices, PPG and competitor product portfolio.
Stay up to date with developments in coatings technology.
Interacts productively with external customers/suppliers to support business needs.
Participate in or leads continuous improvement activities within the Technical function and to support other internal functions, e.g. Production.
Is responsible for the implementation of all EHS activities within your team.
Set objectives, manage and review the performance of a small team. Identify development needs for self and team, and implement agreed development plans to fully develop the effectiveness of the team.
Lead, plan and prioritise the work of a team for the timely delivery of new or reformulated products which meet specifications as outlined in the technical plan.
Identify and progress ways of meeting technical targets through the consideration of various technologies and formulation methods to ensure that products delivered are technologically robust with optimized cost and performance.
Deliver cross-functional technical support and interface to achieve process optimization, FCR target realisation and fulfilment of sales/marketing needs.
Implement lab EHS procedures, product and process compliance to Product Stewardship policies.
Qualifications
Graduate with Honours Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
5-10 years work experience in a technical role at a relevant company within the chemical or coatings industry.
Experience working with other functions and managing people/teams.
In-depth knowledge of paint making and testing techniques.
Thorough understanding of paint manufacturing and production processes.
Detailed comprehension of formulating rules and principles.
Broad knowledge of raw material suppliers and their technologies.
Sound understanding of market requirements, competitive products and performance.
Detailed knowledge of all laboratory and EHS processes and procedures.
Basic knowledge of business, including Supply Chain and Sales/Marketing.
Organisational Awareness, Initiative, Teamwork, Influence & Leadership, Customer Orientation.
Participation in customer visits and line trials within home country location, or occasionally elsewhere within the region depending on technology base/market segment/customer type supported.
