About The Role

The Director of Engineering, R&D will lead a team of team leads and engineers to design, architecture, implement, and facilitate the operation of large-scale cloud systems, MVPs for brand new ideas, or POCs for internal tools. This role will also lead the end-to-end R&D incubation process from ideation to forming a team. We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation and business acumen with a proven track record of building a strong engineering culture that encourages effective collaborations across multiple domains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the senior executives business line head(s) to meet business objectives, through ensuring timely delivery, and making sure system architectures are future-proof
  • Act as a hands-on coach and mentor who contributes to the development effort while helping grow your team members
  • Champion engineering excellence by fostering a culture of alignment with Product Engineering to ensure R&D is at the forefront of adopting new engineering initiatives.
  • Take on the responsibility of performing feasibility checks on new ideas from management or PMs, playing a crucial role in keeping the team focused on pursuing initiatives with the highest potential for success
  • Foster a culture of innovation within R&D to encourage engineers to propose and provide feedback on new ideas
  • Be deeply involved in the full development lifecycle: design, code, test, deploy
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and QA to iterate on the design, implementation, deployment, and monitoring of our product
  • Lead the development of POCs and MVPs with a move fast, break things (safely) mentality, promoting a culture of growth, experimentation and rapid iteration
  • Serve as a product manager as needed, taking ownership of defining product requirements and driving cross-functional teams towards successful product launches.
  • Be actively involved in resource planning and hiring strategy

About You

  • Worked as a software engineer with Java or other modern programming language like Typescript, Scala or equivalent
  • Experience with REST applications and services using open-source Java Frameworks Spring MVC, Spring Boot, Spring Data or other modern programming frameworks
  • Experience with Infrastructure as a Code (IAAC) practice and cloud infrastructure AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD systems
  • NoSQL and Relational databases (We use DynamoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL)
  • Experience designing and developing platform level, reusable components, including event architectures, messaging and caching (JMS, ActiveMQ, Kinesis, Apache Kafka, etc)
  • Experience designing and devleoping big scale Front End applications using one or more of the modern frameworks: React, Angular, React Native, Flutter, iOS, Android, Redux or equivalent
  • Experience with modern experimentation & growth engineering frameworks: A/B testing, feature-flagging, reverse-ETL, or equivalent
  • Optional: Equip with some product management skills and knowledge to effectively serve as a product manager as needed
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience building highly scalable and available distributed systems
  • Managed a team of people managers, team leads or engineers
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, building, structuring, leading technical organizations, including performance management in fast paced organizations
