THE first technical institute in Karnataka, the School of Engineering, affiliated to Madras University, was established in 1862. The Industrial School Dharwad was established in 1973 as was the Civil and Military Station in Bangalore, where students were trained for the PWD’s beginner level services.
By 1993-94, Karnataka had 47 engineering colleges, since then the figure has grown to 199 with intake of approximately 69,000. Nearly 37,000 seats are through the CET while the rest i.e., private seats are filled through exams such as COMED-K.Close to 73% of student intake is in four disciplines: Computer Science; Electronics & Communications; Mechanical and IT. Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, and BV Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering have more than 1000 seats each. At least 67 colleges have an intake of more than 400.
Admission procedure
Students who have completed their 10+2 with Physics, Maths and Chemistry must appear for at least one exam:
- CET conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority that gives access to approximately 54% seats
- Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) test to admit students to 136 private colleges.
- AIEEE for admission to NIT, Surathkal for 740 UG seats
- EPSI’s online National Admission Test (ENAT) for 1,025 seats at MIT
