All Work and No Play? How Cricket Inspires Better Workplace Habits

With the excitement of ICC World Cup 2019 growing bigger, fans are waiting to get bowled over. While the clock ticks for the kick-off in England, here’s how you can adopt some of the gentlemen’s game’s unique qualities to achieve your career dreams.

Let’s take a look.

Team spirit – the real man of the match

How do you work together alongside a team of individuals, where each of them has their own skills and abilities? The team thrives, when each member utilises their unique strengths to work towards the common goal of taking the team’s overall score up.

All is fair in love and sports

Be a sport at work (pun intended). In order to work towards a common goal successfully, you must cultivate fair play within yourself. In cricket, fair play means being respectful of your opponents, fellow players, referees and fans. At the work place, the same must be followed with respect to your competition and fellow team members.

Open your horizons, extra wide

So what if you lost the previous game? Turn it around into another learning opportunity. The more experiences you have, the more you learn. If you didn’t succeed in your last undertaking, adopt your best learnings from the experience and implement them in your current assignment. Focus on making your present work, rather than dwelling on what went wrong before.

Bouncers are necessary

Success doesn’t last. Neither does failure. You win a game, you lose a game. Even at work, no setback is permanent. Your work will provide you with new challenges and opportunities every day. The only constant should be your desire to learn and improve with whatever comes your way.

It’s the journey, not the target

In cricket, it is the process you adopt that decides what your end result turns out to be. If you love what you do and plan well for it, your goals will be that much easier to achieve. You cannot expect to chase the competition down without a concrete plan.

LBW – Lead By Wisdom

A good captain lets the other players shine. If you don’t know what each team member is skilled at, how will you put them to strategic use? To be an effective leader, you must captain your team in a way that encourages them to bring out their best, and in turn enable maximum turn-out.

Playing cricket, like any other sport, is a great learning experience. Anyone who adopts the sportsman spirit in life, both professional and personal, is a winner. You learn to observe and analyse situations as they come by. You learn to focus on your strengths and put them to good use, turning the challenge on its head. All this, while cultivating a sense of integrity towards your task and respect for your competition. Your workplace can be a much healthier and balanced journey if you already know how to be prepared for whatever you’re up against. So, when the workload hits, you simply put your game face on.
